Dr. Nikhil Gupte

Nikhil holds a PhD (2003) in Biostatistics from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a Faculty in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University. He also serves as a Deputy Director of JHU-BJGMC Clinical Research Site. He has more than 25 years of research experience, and it covers a wide spectrum from Biostatistics, Mathematical Epidemiology, Clinical to Behavioural research. He has published more than 100 manuscripts in National and International journals. He is the Managing Trustee of Lakshya Trust.

Dr. Nishi Suryavanshi

Nishi holds Ph.D (1998) in Anthropology from University of Pune. She has received Human Research Ethics training from Johns Hopkins University. She is the Deputy Director of JHU-BJGMC Clinical Research Site with more than 25 years of clinical and socio-behavioral research experience in HIV and TB. Beside her research interest, she is passionate about women empowerment. She is Secretary of the Lakshya Trust.

Dr. Smita Nimkar

Ms. Smita Nimkar has more than 20 years of experience in public health research. She has a multifaceted experience in research Ethics, Regulatory compliance, Quality assurance, Ethics and Regulatory Training, Epidemiological and Behavioural research. She has a deep understanding of ethical issues surrounding research related with human subjects. She is affiliated with BJGMC-JHU CRS and Johns Hopkins India, Pune.

Mr. Abhay Kadam

Mr. Abhay Kadam is an Anthropologist by training. He has secured masters in Anthropology from the University of Pune. He has been working in public health research for over 20 years. His area of expertise is HIV and TB. He has expertise in behavioural and qualitative research, mHealth interventions, operational research, monitoring and evaluation, program implementation, and development of patient education/awareness materials. He has worked in national, international and Government organizations. He has co-led research studies in prevention of HIV transmission from mother to child and tuberculosis.

Dr. Sandeep A. Chavan

Sandeep, a seasoned Public Health professional trained at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai joined Johns Hopkins Centre for Infectious Diseases (CIDI) in Pune, India in 2023. With over a decade of program management experience, his journey includes a notable nine-year tenure at Tata Trusts. His expertise broadly covers public health management, research, grants life cycle management, and impact evaluation. During his time at Tata Trusts, Sandeep led collaborative initiatives in remote regions of the country, focusing on primary healthcare, communicable diseases, mental health, disability and MCHN.

Dr. Sandesh Patil

Dr. Sandesh Patil is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, he graduated from BJGMC. Dr. Pail also holds a master’s degree in Public Health Nutrition from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. He has more than 25 years of clinical and research experience in the area of HIV/AIDS. He has published several manuscripts in National and International journals.

Dr. Mallika Alexander

Dr. Mallika Alexander a gynaecologist by training from CMC Vellore. She has over 25 years of experience in clinical, public health and behavioural research among women affected with HIV or TB. She has organized and supervised clinical skills training in Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), a MoHFW programme, for district training teams of Maharashtra, Goa and Dadra Nagar Haveli for Department of Family Health and Welfare, Government of Maharashtra. She has successfully led clinical and social science research, and managed DAIDS, NIH funded HPTN, MTN and ACTG clinical trials. She has expertise in conducting large field-based survey and interventional research among young people, youth sexuality and parent child communication on sexual and reproductive health in rural and urban areas. She has immense understanding of socio-cultural influences on women’s vulnerabilities is a dynamic researcher on issues related to women’s health.  Dr. Alexander has co-authored several National and International peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Gauri Dhumal

Dr. Gauri Dhumal is a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Pune with over 13 years of experience in the field of public health research. Since 2015, she is currently working as a study coordinator at the National Institute of Health, funded BJ Government Medical College-Johns Hopkins India, Clinical Research Site in Pune. Her research interests include addiction disorders, mental health among those affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and tuberculosis. Her research work has helped the Food and Drug Administrator (FDA) to extend the gutka ban rule in 2013 in Maharashtra. She has represented India at several National and International conferences. She was a Female Global Scholar in the program, “The Women in Global Health Research Initiative” which was initiated by Weill Cornell University, New York, 2018. She has successfully completed the USAID sponsored PEER Women’s Mentorship Program. has co-authored articles in local language which were useful for the community. She has authored several National and International peer-reviewed publications.

 

Dr. Neetal Narvekar

Dr. Neetal Nevrekar is an obstetrician and gynecologist by training with over twenty years of experience in patient care and clinical research. She has done her graduation and post-graduation from the Grant Medical College and Sir J.J Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, India. Since 2010, she is a clinical coordinator at the National Institute of Health, United States-funded BJ Government Medical College-Johns Hopkins India, Clinical Research Site in Pune, India. She has extensive teaching experience in Mumbai and Pune. She has expertise in clinical research and her experience includes but not limited to successful conduct of various HIV and TB clinical trials. Her expertise includes health of women living with HIV/AIDS and co-morbidities like TB, anemia, stigma and depression. Her research has helped the government to adopt and implement new policies in HIV and TB National programs. She has successfully completed the USAID sponsored PEER Women’s Mentorship Program. She represents Women’s Health Inter-network Scientific Committee (WHISC) at NIH funded International IMPAACT-ACTG Network. He has several National and International publications to her credit.

Ms. Savita Kanade

Ms. Savita Kanade is an anthropologist by training. She has more than 30 years of experience in behavioural research in sexual and reproductive health, maternal mortality, gender based domestic violence and safe abortion practices. Ms. Kanade is currently working for B.J. Government Medical Collage-Johns Hopkins India Clinical Trial Unit as Community and Outreach Coordinator. She is extremely well connected with the community stake holders and is key link between the community and public health researchers in prioritizing their research agenda. She is a member of KEM Hospital Research Centre Ethics Committee as Social Scientist.

Dr. Mandar Paradkar

Dr. Mandar Paradkar is a paediatrician by training. He completed his undergraduate medical training from Krishna Medical College, Karad and post-graduate training in Paediatrics from Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune. He was a Commonwealth scholar in the MPH program at the University of Cardiff from 2014 – 15 He has more than 15 years of experience in clinical research, particularly infectious disease and is currently Senior TB Research Manager at the BJ Government Medical College and Johns Hopkins University Clinical Research Site. He has published 15 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.

Mr. Shrikant Kothalkar

Shrikant Kothalkar is a retired senior banking professional from State Bank of India, having vast experience in various fields- banking, administration, personnel management and human resources. He has also served as Executive Secretary of a large Public Trust in Pune, as Principal Business Consultant in a Financial Risk & Regulatory compliance MNC IT Company, as Senior Consultant (HR & Admin) with Agri Finance Corporation of India, Mumbai and as Mentor and Financial Advisor to beneficiaries of a Trust which is supported by Confederation of Indian Industries engaged in working for the development of underprivileged youths. Shri Kothalkar is associated with Lakshya Trust since January 2023. He is based in Pune.

Ethics Committee

Lakshya Ethics Committee was established to independently assess the ethical issues related to human subject research. The Ethics Committee is Chaired by Dr. Swati Shirwadkar and Dr. Nikhil Gupte is the Member secretary. Other members of the committee include clinicians, social scientists, lawyers, and lay personnel.
